Palm Springs Date Shake

Born in the Coachella Valley date palm groves, planted by Middle Eastern immigrants in the early 1900s, the Palm Springs Date Shake became a creamy California icon. These shakes were (and still are!) dreamy, caramel-sweet treats made from fresh dates and milk. And yet… why did I just discover them on my 2025 trip to Palm Springs with my fabulous friends?! Between the sunshine, laughter, and unforgettable bites, this shake quickly became the culinary star of the trip. So naturally, I had to create a lighter, everyday version back home. This recipe blends almond or nonfat milk and yogurt, protein powder, and chia seeds for a nourishing upgrade, packed with protein, fiber, antioxidants, calcium, and potassium, while keeping that classic, velvety date-shake magic alive. It’s sunshine in a glass with a modern twist… and a sweet reminder of one fabulous adventure. 🌴✨

Equipment

  • high-speed blender

Ingredients

  • 3 Medjool dates pitted and chopped (and if in Palm Springs, you stop here-> https://shieldsdategarden.com/ for dates!)
  • 4 oz almond milk or milk of your choice
  • 4 oz Greek yogurt plain, nonfat
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 Tablespoon almond butter or peanut butter or PB2
  • 1 Tablespoon chia seeds
  • 1 scoop of vanilla protein powder or chocolate if preferred
  • teaspoon sea salt
  • Dash of cinnamon

Instructions

  • Add the dates through the sea salt to your blender and blend until smooth. Taste and adjust as needed, adding more milk for a thinner consistency or ½ cup of ice for extra froth. Pour into a serving glass, finish with a dash of cinnamon, and sip away. Enjoy!

Notes

This shake can be tweaked and adjusted to your preferences. The original shake uses ice cream instead of milk for a serious treat, or frozen yogurt for a lighter treat. Chocolate protein powder or cocoa powder is a tasty change-up if you are a chocolate lover!
