Is fiber suddenly the new protein craze? After years of high-protein products everywhere, this year feels like a big pivot back to fiber. With fibermaxxing headlines and trending all over social media (yes, it’s a thing), it’s time to take a closer look. When I studied nutrition, fiber was always a foundational topic, and guess what? It still is. I just didn’t come up with a catchy phrase for it, lol. Let’s explore why fiber deserves a place on your plate and where the hype might be stretching the facts.
Why Fiber-Dense Foods Matter
Fiber helps support a healthy gut microbiome and can help you feel fuller for longer, a crucial component in weight management and energy regulation. (1, 2, 3) We discussed this here when we explored the numerous benefits of berries. 🍓
The public health message is clear: we should all be getting enough fiber from a variety of plant foods 🌿. In simple terms, fiber is the part of plants our bodies don’t digest, but our gut bacteria love 🦠. Think of it as fuel for your microbiome. Populations that consume more fiber tend to have lower rates of chronic diseases, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers ❤️💪. A higher fiber intake is also linked to maintaining a healthier body weight and overall metabolic balance ⚖️. (4)
And while fiber might not sound flashy, it’s quietly powerful. What we eat every day can have a powerful impact on our gut, metabolism, and even our mood. So, let’s start with why fiber-dense foods are worth celebrating. 🌾
Gut health & the microbiome
When it comes to gut health and the microbiome, it is all about fiber, specifically resistant starch.
Resistant starch is a type of fiber found in foods like beans, whole grains, oats, and legumes. It escapes digestion in the small intestine and gets fermented by gut bacteria in the colon. This fermentation produces beneficial compounds (like short-chain fatty acids) that support inflammation reduction and metabolic health (1, 2).
Studies show that diets rich in resistant starch can improve glucose metabolism and support weight management. (5, 6) Whole foods with intact structure, like less-processed grains and legumes, tend to offer bigger benefits than highly processed ones. (7)

However, if you hit the fibermaxxing trend too hard, such as jumping from 12 grams of daily fiber to 80 grams overnight, that fermentation process will really get you… and not in a pleasant way 💨🥴. So start low and go slow! We’ll walk through that process below 👇.
Facts About Oats & Legumes
Oats: These grains are not only rich in soluble fiber (β-glucan) but also contain resistant starch. Studies have found that about 25% of the starch in oats is of the resistant variety. (7) Eating oats, especially when prepared simply, has been linked to lower glycemic response and beneficial shifts in gut microbes. (8, 9)
Legumes (beans, lentils, peas): These are true fiber and protein powerhouses. Evidence indicates that pulses may positively alter gut microbiota and support metabolic health. (10)
Bottom line: Including oats and legumes regularly can give your gut a significant upgrade, but how you prepare them matters. Think slow cooking, simple prep, and minimal processing.
Where the Overload (or Hype) Comes In🤯
Fiber doesn’t automatically equal healthy when it’s packaged in ultra-processed foods. Some “fiber-fortified” snacks might wear a halo😇, but if they are high in sugar or additives, the benefits are muted.
Resistant starch is powerful, but here’s the reality check — the recommended 20–30 grams per day of resistant starch is several times higher than what most Americans actually get (~3–8 g/day) (7, 9). In other words, we don’t need to overcorrect overnight.
Processing matters too: oats that are heavily refined can lose much of their resistant starch (8). And I’ll repeat it for the people in the back 😄 – Whole Foods are best!
One more thing: everyone’s gut is different. Age, gut health, metabolism, and dietary habits all affect how you respond to fiber (1, 2, 3, 4). So don’t compare your journey (or your fiber intake) to someone else’s on TikTok.
How to Increase Your Fiber (Without Going Overboard)
✅ Start with whole foods: Add oats (overnight oats or baked deliciously😋), legumes, and whole grains into your week.
🌈 Focus on variety: Mix beans into salads, add lentils to soups and savory dishes, or include oats for breakfast.
🧑🍳 Balance prep: Let cooked starchy foods cool or use less processed versions to slightly boost resistant starch (1, 2, 6)
🥗 Mind your plate: Instead of chasing grams, aim for half your plate to be veggies and fruit, a quarter lean protein, and a quarter whole grain or legume-based starch. Simple works – the balanced plate!
💧 Hydrate & move: Fiber needs fluid and movement to function properly. Aim for at least 64 oz of water daily and engage in regular physical activity.
