As I embrace the arrival of 55 (and I know many of you are right there with me☺️), and the first day of Spring🌷, I couldn’t resist sharing my top 5+5 hits for tips and recipes to celebrate this milestone in style. Birthdays are all about joy, laughter, loved ones, and, of course, cake (my favorite, which is the reason this blog is called Birthday Cake Nutrition🎂)! As a dietitian, I’m here to reassure you that indulging in your favorite treats doesn’t have to sabotage your health goals. With a few simple strategies, you can savor your birthday cake guilt-free while still nurturing your body. Let’s delve into these 5+5 birthday cake nutrition tips that will keep you feeling fabulous on your special day and beyond!

  1. Take Time for You:

Before diving headfirst into the day, no matter what type of day is ahead of you, take a moment to focus on yourself. Whether it’s a morning walk or run, a yoga session, or simply enjoying a cup of coffee or tea, prioritizing self-care sets the tone for a positive day ahead. In addition to any of that, any length of meditation is a gift you can give to yourself, every single day. 

  1. Plan Ahead:

Planning is key to maintaining a balanced approach to nutrition, especially on special occasions. Before the big day, take some time to plan your meals and snacks to ensure you’re nourishing your body with plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. When it comes to enjoying birthday treats, balance is key. A balanced approach ensures you’re getting a variety of nutrients while still leaving room for a slice of cake, a glass of wine, or your desired treat. Decide what you want to splurge on, and plan to enjoy every bite.

  1. 🍿Balance Your Popcorn:

What 😜?? Yes, according to the USDA Popcorn Board (lol, yes, this is a thing), Americans eat 14 billion quarts of popcorn annually. So since it is my birthday, I talk a lot about balancing your plate, and I am a lover of popcorn (and apparently, not alone), I wanted to dig into what are the healthiest options out there right now. With the right popcorn brand, you can enjoy all the crunch and satisfaction of popcorn while reaping the benefits of fiber and whole grains. I picked the top brands I hear my clients mention, so I got curious and sampled them all (for research of course 😉):

  • All servings are 3.75 cups; 3-4 grams of dietary fiber; 2 grams of protein
    • Skinny pop original
      • Ingredients: popcorn kernels, sunflower oil, salt
      • Calories: 150; Total Fat: 10g; Saturated Fat: 1g; Sodium: 75mg
      • A favorite. Tasty, slightly buttery, slightly salty.
    • Lesser Evil Himalayan Pink Salt
      • Ingredients: organic non-GMO popcorn, organic extra virgin coconut oil, Himalayan salt
      • Calories: 120; Total Fat: 6g; Saturated Fat: 5g; Sodium: 190mg
      • I do not love the coconut flavor in my popcorn, but I know many do.
    • G.H. Cretors Popcorn Farmhouse
      • Ingredients: popcorn, vegetable oil, clarified butter, sea salt, natural flavor
      • Calories: 170; Total Fat: 12g; Saturated Fat: 3g; Sodium: 220mg
      • Smells like movie theater popcorn upon opening, but not quite as strong in actual flavor.
    • Boom Chicka Pop
      • Ingredients: popcorn, non-GMO sunflower and/or canola oil, sea salt
      • Calories: 150; Total Fat: 9g; Saturated Fat: 1g; Sodium: 150mg
      • Tasty without any strong flavors. 
  • Awesome, so now what?
    • Opt for popcorn brands with minimal sodium content while grocery shopping. 
    • According to the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, excessive intake of saturated fat, exceeding 5 to 6 percent of your total daily calorie intake, is associated with an increased risk of heart disease, as suggested by the American Heart Association.
    • As for any food, more ingredients = more processed. 
    • Non-GMO (non-genetically modified organism) or Organic is the safest path to healthy popcorn, as well as other snacks. Organic foods, as certified by California Certified Organic Farmers, prohibit any form of genetic modification, which can offer benefits such as reducing the risks associated with genetically modified foods, including allergies and antibiotic resistance, as stated by the Center for Food Safety. Additionally, organic farming practices exclude the use of pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers, some of which are linked to hormone disruption and certain cancers, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.
  1. Snack Savvy (not just on popcorn!):

To prevent overindulging later in the day fuel up with healthy snacks throughout the day. If you read my blogs, you have heard me mention the philosophy of produce + protein for snacks. Some healthy options like Greek yogurt with berries, veggies with hummus, or a handful of nuts with a tablespoon of dried fruit to keep hunger at bay and cravings in check. 

  1. Savor the Flavor

Finally, it’s time to enjoy those treats! As for the birthday cake🎂, savor every bite. Take the time to appreciate the flavors, textures, and memories associated with the cake. And while it’s tempting (some might say required) to toast to another trip around the sun with a few cocktails🍸, savor every sip. It’s essential to drink alcohol mindfully and stay hydrated. Remember, it’s not about restriction; it’s about enjoying your treat (or treats😊) in moderation and without guilt.
